Dental implants are the most successful form of treatment available for the replacement of missing teeth. Implants offer you teeth that look, feel and function like natural teeth. Loose and uncomfortable dentures can now be replaced with something that is permanent and feels like part of you. Implants are medical-grade titanium screws placed into the jawbone as a substitute for a missing tooth root. They are allowed to integrate naturally with the bone (a process called osseointegration) before a crown, bridge or fixed denture is fitted to replace one or more missing teeth, thus eliminating the need for uncomfortable or ill-fitting dentures. Dental implants may be needed for a variety of reasons including trauma, decay or gum disease. Missing teeth can cause the lips and face to collapse, giving a premature aged appearance, as the bony structure that was once supporting a tooth or teeth have deteriorated.
Most patients, who are in good general health with good oral hygiene, are suitable for dental implants. However, not every patient may be suitable for implants. A thorough assessment will be conducted on an individual case basis. Some conditions that may prevent patients from suitability include: Type II diabetes, lack of adequate bone density, alcohol related problems, psychiatric disorders. Brunswick Dentists will consult with you on suitability and offer alternatives available if you are deemed not suitable for implants.
There are many benefits when receiving implants which include: improved appearance, improved comfort and speech, improved self-esteem, eat what you want, smile with confidence, maintain healthy adjacent teeth, long-term results, preserve jawbone and better overall health and quality of life.
The procedure for receiving a dental implant is usually a two-stage process with the first step involving a minor incision in your gum to place your implant into your jawbone, taking between 1-2 hours. This procedure is conducted under a local anesthetic ensuring you are completely comfortable, with many people reporting very little to no discomfort and will often return to work or their normal routine the next day. There are some patients who may experience post-surgical soreness and minor swelling. This can often be relieved with everyday over-the-counter pain relief medication. Once your implant has been placed, the incision is closed with a couple of stitches, some are dissolving and some will need to be removed, our dentist will discuss the most appropriate for you. After the placement of your implant it is left to heal and fuse with your jawbone, during which time a temporary crown or bridge can be placed, allowing for full mouth function and smile appearance. Once healed, your temporary teeth are removed, replaced with your new permanent teeth so you can enjoy a rejuvenated, healthy, natural looking new smile. Depending on your current oral and overall health, the process from receiving your implant, bonding with your jawbone and receiving your new teeth can take between 3 – 6 months; following your assessment appointment, our dental team will be able to give you a more accurate timeframe.
